Best Thermal Imaging Camera

Thermal camera

The performance/specification of a thermal imaging camera really does dictate their application. There are many differences between high end thermal camera and the low end budget cameras and essentially why low budget cameras shouldn’t be used for thermographic surveys or important diagnostics. The main reason being related to IR resolution, thermal sensitivity, control of the radiometric span and other user-controlled functions.

Initially thermal imaging cameras were basic and expensive. Max resolution was just 120 x 120 pixels. They now boast an incredible with 640 × 480 thermal resolutions, but you will pay for that top end spec.

The thermal camera is definitely a useful tool for the restoration industry to have in their armoury, although the costs of an adequate thermal camera has drastically reduced, don’t buy cheap as the images will be poor and your diagnostics will be inaccurate.

With advancements in technology manufactures of thermal imaging equipment have been able to produce cameras at much lower costs making them more affordable and as such, their use has become more and more popular. To have a range of basic thermal imaging cameras sold for under £1000 is a note worthy purchase.

Listening to guidance from restoration techs and surveyors alike, we are showcasing their favourites, based on usability, features and manufacturers customer service

Testo 868s Thermal Imaging Camera
The Testo 868s Thermal Imaging Camera has several useful features which help the user make the most of its impressive thermographic capabilities. The non-contact infrared thermal sensor has a resolution of 160 x 120 pixels and measures temperature from -30˚C to 650˚C over two separate ranges. Thermal sensitivity is just 80mK meaning that temperature differences as small as 0.1˚C can be visualised on screen. The fixed-focus 31˚ x 23˚ field of view allows the user to make quick inspections over a large area.

Images and video are shown on the Testo 868s’ colour screen which has a range of four palettes. The ScaleAssist function automatically selects a colour scale in order to properly highlight temperature differences across the image. Hot and cold spot recognition also highlights the extremes present on screen whilst ε-Assist automatically sets emissivity adjustment in order to maintain accuracy. Optional Testo SuperResolution software artificially increases resolution to 320 x 240 pixels for even more precise thermal imaging.

A digital camera is integrated into the Testo 868s so it can save visible images alongside their thermographic counterparts, thus permitting easier analysis of heat maps. Images and video can be saved to the camera’s large (2.8GB) internal memory and then transferred to a PC via a USB cable or to a smart device with the Testo Thermography App (available for free from Google Play and the App Store) via WLAN wireless connectivity.

The Testo 868s is built with practicality in mind and is sturdy enough to withstand the bumps and scrapes of everyday use.
