How effective is a dehumidifier for drying clothes?

Dehumidifiers for drying clothes is a great alternative to tumble driers. It will drawer the air from the room into the dehumidifier and remove the moisture from it, then expel drier air back into the area. with this continuous cycle, the moisture from your clothing will be attracted to the dry air thus drying your clothing.

The most notable function on the modern dehumidifiers is the inclusion of a specific laundry dry mode. Designed to dry loads of washing quickly this mode runs the dehumidifier at its highest fan speed and aims to lower the relative humidity to around 40%.

It is far cheaper to run than a tumble drier as using heat is always more expensive on the electricity.

For best results, the dehumidifier should be placed in a small room with windows and doors shut, obviously with your wet clothing on a clothes rack. This is due to to a dehumidifier taking a lot longer to dry your clothing than a tumble drier, so reducing the airspace it has to work with, will really help speed the drying process up.

Using a dehumidifier to dry clothes can be an effective and energy-efficient way to remove excess moisture from your laundry. Here are the steps to follow:

1. Choose a suitable location: Select a room that is well-ventilated and has a power outlet available. A laundry room or bathroom with a window or fan is ideal.
2. Prepare your clothes: First, wring out any excess water from your clothes or run them through a spin cycle in your washing machine. Then, hang your clothes on a drying rack or clothesline.
3. Place the dehumidifier nearby: Position the dehumidifier within a few feet of your clothes, preferably downwind of them.
4. Turn on the dehumidifier: Turn on the dehumidifier and set the desired humidity level. Depending on the model, you may have a range of options to choose from.
5. Wait for the clothes to dry: The dehumidifier will extract moisture from the air, causing it to become drier. This will help your clothes to dry faster. Depending on the humidity level and the amount of moisture in your clothes, it may take a few hours or overnight for your clothes to fully dry.
6. Check on the progress: Periodically check on your clothes to make sure they are drying evenly. If necessary, rotate the clothes or adjust the placement of the drying rack.
7. Turn off the dehumidifier: Once your clothes are dry, turn off the dehumidifier and unplug it from the power source.

TIP – Also the addition of a fan directed the clothing will really speed up the drying process

Always check the manufactures recommended area size to ensure you purchase the correct one, as buying a dehumidifier that won’t cover the sqm of the room you place it in will be a waste of money

There are two types of dehumidifier.

Refrigerant

These use cooling gas to condensate the moisture into either a

• a trough that you physically have to empty (the machine will switch off when full)
• a trough with a pump that will allow a drain hose to be placed into a drain / sink, so when the trough is full, the pump will automatically pump the water into your drainage receptacle

Desiccant

These use a desiccant wheel to capture the moisture and expel it via a vent pipe

• alike a vented tumble drier, you will need to vent the pipe to an external source

Tumble Drier vs Dehumidifier
