Every restoration company owns a Hepa air scrubber, but they are not all the same. The variants are the types of filters available for installation and the maximum rated air flow
We have a selected the more common Hepa air scrubbers used in the restoration industry below for comparison
What is a Hepa Air Scrubber Used For?
Air scrubbers are also available with HEPA filtration, allowing you to filter air particles down to 0.3 microns in size at a 99.97% efficiency rating. In addition, they can work alongside a variety of three-stage HEPA negative air machines, which feature replaceable first, second, and third filters. Air scrubbers are excellent for construction and healthcare organizations, doing an effective job at removing both airborne and settled dust and bacteria.
Air scrubbers often use negative ions that attach themselves to both airborne and surface particles, making them heavier and easier to clean up. In some cases, air scrubbers can take these heavier particles and filter them through an internal system.
HEPA (high efficiency particulate air),
This type of air filter can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns (µm)
HEPA Filter
According to the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, (IEST) with regard to performance, there are 6 types – A, B, C, D, E & F. Each has its own distinct characteristics as shown by chart 1 below.
Because of the fragile nature of HEPA filters, they may be damaged in transit or upon installation by less-than-knowledgeable technicians. Types of damage include fractured frames from stacking in trucks, punctured media due to objects penetrating the shipping carton, filters that are dropped when being handled, filters stored incorrectly, and finally filter media integrity damaged upon installation. In order to assure that factory tested HEPA filters do not have pin-hole “leaks” and that gasketing and frames are leak free, in-place testing with heterogeneous (cod) dioctyl phthalate (DOP) or suitable substitute is highly recommended. This process introduces cold DOP upstream at a concentration of 10-29 micrograms/liter of air and utilizes a forward light scattering photometer to scan downstream to detect leaks greater than 0.01% of upstream concentration.
A HEPA filter is only as good as its gasketing and framing when installed and because all HEPA filters are used in critical applications, in-place HEPA filter testing should be mandatory.
Dri_eaz Hepa 500
With user-friendly and versatile features, the DefendAir HEPA 500 is ideal for handling indoor air quality needs on every job. The DefendAir HEPA 500 uses true HEPA filter media with an efficiency rating of 99.97% against 0.3-micron oily aerosol particles. The DefendAir HEPA 500’s rotomoulded design is stackable, lightweight, offers superior durability. Incorporating built-in moulded duct attachment rings, the incoming contaminated air and outgoing cleaned air can be be ducted in a variety of air filtration setups.

Trotec TAC 3000
The TAC 3000 allows for such a variable range of applications like probably offered by no other air cleaner on the market: from “standard construction sites” over asbestos abatements to hygiene-sensitive areas or virus filtering, and even in cleanroom environments – and all that with only one device!
In addition to modularly combinable filter elements, the basis of this high variability of applications is especially the unique Vario-shift function thanks to which the filter chain can be flexibly configured wither with a terminal fan or HEPA filter as is for example prescribed for cleanroom environments.
Recommendation for filter combinations specific to the application and corresponding room size suitability for TAC air cleaners from Trotec:
TAC 3000 | ||
Application | Filter Combination | Suitable for room sizes of |
Coarse dust (≤ 3 ACH) | G4 | 220 m3 |
Fine particulates (≤ 3 ACH) | G4 + F7 to F9 | 110 m3 |
Suspended matter (≥ 10 ACH) | G4 + H13/H14 | 50 m3 |
Hygienic areas (≥ 15 ACH) | G4 + H13/H14 | 35 m3 |
With an assumed room height of 2.5 m; ² Typical coarse dust tasks: sawing, filing; ³ Typical fine dust tasks: restoration works with materials containing minerals or glass wool; ⁴ Typical suspended matter tasks: grinding, asbestos abatement or mould remediation, mineral dusts etc. ; ⁵ H13/H14 downstream; ⁶ Air exchange per hour
Filter accessories
- G4 coarse particulate air filters Pre-filters in Z-line design for the separation of coarse particles. Required for protection of the main filter.
- F7 fine particulate air filters. Main filters for restoration work performed with materials containing minerals or glass wool, or final filters for the spray paint filter for preventing dust inclusions in paint surfaces.
- Spray paint filters. To ensure an effective extraction of spray paint mists in airless or compressed air applications.
- H13 HEPA filters – Main filters for mineral dust, quartz dust or hardwood dust, mould remediation or asbestos abatement. In a terminal installation position for applications in cleanroom, hygiene or hospital areas.
- H14 high-efficiency particulate air filters – As H13, additionally allows for effective bacteria and virus filtering from the room air.

Alorair Cleanshield HEPA 550
The Cleanshield HEPA 550 is the professional choice of Air Scrubbers allowing work to proceed in the same location as the unit (Unlike Ozone Machines). The air scrubber moves over 550cfm at its maximum velocity and filters out a number of particulates through its 3-stage filter process.
- The Pre-Filter removes the larger dust and easily visible air borne particles.
- The HEPA Filter removes 99.96% of particles with a size of 0.3micros or larger in size such as mould spores and fungi.
- The Carbon Filter is designed for VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) including food odours, paint fumes, sewer odours and many more unpleasant smells.
Replacement Filters are available.
As well as just being used within the room to filter out particles it can also be used as a “Negative Air Machine” sucking all the air out through the filters and pushing the cleaned air out of the room, via a duct, leaving it with a negative pressure.
The machine can also be used as a “Positive Pressure Air Filtration Machine” for uses in cleanrooms where clean air is required to go into rooms, ducting again is used with this machine for the above purpose.
